Navy Veterans Account for Approximately 30% of U.S. Mesothelioma Cases

May 2, 2026 · Demographics

U.S. Navy veterans account for approximately 30% of all U.S. mesothelioma cases despite making up only about 7% of the veteran population, according to multiple epidemiological studies. The disproportionate disease burden reflects the intense asbestos exposure that characterized Navy service from World War II through the 1980s.

Why Navy veterans face elevated risk

Asbestos was the standard insulation, fireproofing, and high-temperature material aboard U.S. Navy ships from the 1940s through the early 1980s. The Navy specified asbestos-containing products for steam pipe insulation, boiler refractory bricks, gaskets and packing materials, fireproofing in compartments and bulkheads, and a wide range of engineering equipment.

Highest-risk Navy ratings

  • Boiler Technicians (BT) — direct work in boiler rooms with asbestos refractory and pipe insulation
  • Machinist's Mates (MM) — engineering space rates around boilers, pumps, and steam piping
  • Hull Maintenance Technicians (HT) — pipe repair work involving cutting asbestos pipe insulation

See the Navy veterans page for detailed information on applicable trusts and documentation paths.
