Asbestos Bankruptcy Trusts Have Paid Over $22 Billion Since Inception

May 3, 2026 · Industry

Cumulative payouts from the U.S. asbestos bankruptcy trust system have surpassed $22 billion since the first trust (Johns-Manville) began operations in 1988, according to industry analyses of public trust annual reports. The trust system continues paying claims at a sustained pace, with combined annual payouts averaging $1.5-2 billion across all 60+ active trusts.

Major contributors to total payouts

The Johns-Manville Trust remains the largest single source of trust payouts, having processed over 800,000 individual claims since inception. Despite its modest 5.1% pro rata percentage, the trust's broad eligibility coverage means most asbestos claimants file with Manville. Owens Corning/Fibreboard, USG, and W.R. Grace round out the top trust payers based on combined claim volume and per-claim payment.

Sustained claim volume

Trust claim volumes have remained sustained as mesothelioma diagnoses continue at peak rates among veterans of the 1940s-1980s asbestos exposure era. The 20-50 year disease latency means that 2025-2040 represents the peak diagnosis decades for the entire workforce exposed during the asbestos era. New trust claims continue to be filed at a rate of approximately 5,000-7,000 per year across all trusts combined.

What this means for current claimants

The robust ongoing operation of the trust system means that current and future mesothelioma claimants have a stable path to compensation. New diagnoses today have similar trust filing options to claimants from 10-15 years ago. Take the eligibility quiz to identify which trusts apply to your case.
